In our last full week of summer, with the leaves just beginning to turn different shades of green, brown, orange and yellow, the Diocese again asks for our stewardship of support.  Together As One—our Diocesan Annual Appeal—is kicking off so to speak this week with a letter sent to all parishioners throughout the diocese.

Summer quickly passes as we are accustomed to expect. And with the nearing of September, the new school year begins. 

After a short summer break (July) our parish Finance Board will gather this week for its monthly meeting.  By Diocesan mandate each parish must have a Finance Board from five to eight members—with exceptions—meeting no less than four times a year.  After a short summer break (July) our parish Finance Board will gather this week for its monthly meeting. 

We welcome Emily Schieltz as our new Ascension Parish Director.  For the past year she has served on the Parish Finance Board and I asked her to replace Gaylia Ostermeier who is ‘retiring’  as a long time parish director.

We are all familiar with the feeding of the multitudes, in particular John’s description of the 5,000 hungry and tired individuals gathered before Jesus and his disciples. Some say the miracle that transpired with the boys’ five loaves and two fish actually culminated with the sharing of all the food the many individuals had brought with them

Bishop Nickless is requesting that parishes take a special flood relief collection the weekend of July 6 and 7. Our diocesan Catholic Charities is receiving a grant from Catholic Charities USA in order to provide direct financial assistance to flood victims in our area. Funds donated to this flood relief collection will be added to this assistance program.

We welcome Fr. Joseph Arackal, a Vincentian Missionary priest, who will be present at our weekend Masses. 

In a reflection given back in 2015 emphasizing the grace of ‘family,’ Pope Francis alluded to the word “father” as particularly  meaningful in the lives of Christians. 

Throughout the month of June—depending on the date for Easter—the Catholic world is graced by beautiful processions in honor of the Feast of Corpus Christi.
